Everyone knows that Florida has theme parks, beaches and golf. But few know that Florida also has some of the best fishing in the world. And in Vero Beach, in the Western portion of Indian River County, there’s a whole other world to be experienced.
Blue Cypress Lake is considered to be one of the best kept fishing secrets in Central Florida. The lake’s name comes from the bluish glow off the lake's cypress trees, while the dark waters come from the tannins of the cypress trees. The Lake is over 600 acres of some of the cleanest waters in Florida, yet its expansive stretching out over 10 miles and approximately 8 feet deep.
As a fisherman’s paradise, catches include bluegill, catfish, chain pickerel, crappie, largemouth bass, shellcrackers, and warmouth. Although the Lake is best known as a premiere destination for bass, the largest largemouth on record at the lake weighed in at an impressive 18 pounds, 2 ounces.
Airboat Tours are a must for any visitor to the area. There’s sure to be numerous sightings of Florida alligators on these tours. Enjoy seeing Osprey, Bald Eagles, Egrets, Snail Kites, Red Shoulder Hawks, King Fisher, Barn Owls and many different species of Ducks including Tree Ducks.
